Music Class Info for 2018-2019
5th Grade Music:
Music is a required for all 5th grade students. Our Music Teaching Team (3 music teachers) will take a grade level and divide them up into 3 music classes. These classes will meet 2 times per week for music. For 5th grade, the music classes are Choir, General Music and Beginning strings (*beginning band is offered to 5th grade at Hawthorne) The survey that we have given out will help us place your child into one of those classes. It also gives us input regarding the type of music instruction for which they have an interest. However, it does not guarantee placement in a given class. For those 5th grade students interested in beginning string class, we only have a limited number of instruments available to borrow. Even though students have the option of borrowing instruments from the school (for free), the best instruments are available from music stores (for rent). We recommend instrument rental through Summerhayes Music (801-268-4446), Riverton Music (801-255-8300) or Bert Murdock Music (801-562-5139).
6th grade music:
Music is also required for all 6th grade students. Just as was mentioned regarding 5th grade music, our team of 3 music teachers take all 6th grade students and divide them up into 3 music classes: Beginning band, Choir, and String Class. Students will meet 2 times per week for music class. Instruments taught in beginning band include clarinet, flute, trumpet or cornet, trombone and percussion keyboard. Saxophones and electric bass are options, but because the district does not provide those instruments, they would need to be rented. Instruments taught in beginning string class include violin, viola, cello.
We will also survey 6th grade students and parents to help us place students in either Band, Strings or Choir. Once they are placed in a class they will remain in that class for the school year.
Please note that instruments are available for students to borrow, However, there is a limited number of instruments. Instrument availability is another consideration that is used for placing students. Even though students have the option of borrowing instruments from the school, the best instruments are available from music stores. For the best quality instruments, we recommend instrument rental through Summerhayes Music (801-268-4446), Riverton Music (801-255-8300) or Bert Murdock Music (801-562-5139).
